Better There Travel: What Is Transformational Travel (and Why It Might Be Exactly What You Need Right Now)

Updated: Mar 23

We need something deeper—something that lets our soul breathe, slows the noise, and whispers truth to the parts of us we’ve forgotten. Something that brings us back to ourselves and, even more importantly, closer to God.

That’s what transformational travel is all about.

It’s not just a trend or a fancy travel word. It’s a different way of seeing the world—and letting God meet you in it.

(And no, it doesn’t require a flowing linen dress and a spontaneous picnic in Tuscany… but like, if that happens, let’s not fight it.)

The First Time I Felt the Shift

I didn’t always know travel could be sacred.

The first time I noticed it, I had planned a solo retreat to Monterey. No major agenda, no sightseeing checklist—just me, the coast, and some space to think. And something in me shifted. Ideas flowed freely. I felt alive, awake, and at peace.

After that, I made it a priority to get away once or twice a year. Just me, my thoughts, and probably a coffee mug I was overly emotionally attached to.

Then I started noticing it in other moments, too.

  • On trips with my husband—we always came back more connected, more in love (and usually with at least one inside joke that would confuse everyone else for years).

  • On a trip to England with my dad, we had deep conversations I’ll treasure forever.

  • In Greece, I sat on a balcony overlooking the ocean, and I could hear God’s voice so clearly, it was as if the breeze itself carried His words. (Also: baklava. 10/10 recommend.)

  • And most recently? I turned 40 during a wildfire evacuation and still felt the peace of God more profoundly than I ever had before.

Not exactly the birthday I had in mind—but the one I’ll never forget.

The Difference Between Tourism and Transformation

Most people travel to escape their lives.

I want to help people travel to add depth to their lives.

Transformational travel isn’t about checking off landmarks or getting the perfect sunset photo for Instagram (though I fully support you chasing golden hour). It’s about creating space to think, to connect, to reflect—and to hear the voice of God more clearly.

It’s about coming back not just rested, but renewed. With a fresh perspective. A softened heart. And a story that becomes part of who you are.

That’s the heartbeat of Better There Travel.

It’s not about being better there.

It’s about knowing Him better—wherever you are.

Real Moments of Transformation

You don’t need a five-star resort or a 15-day itinerary to have a transformational moment. Sometimes, all it takes is a little space, a little silence, and a little intentionality.

Here are just a few real examples of transformational travel moments—ones I’ve experienced or helped others plan:

  • Journaling on a quiet balcony in Italy, asking God what’s next.

  • Hiking through Scottish hills and realizing you’ve been carrying too much—for too long.

  • Praying in a cozy mountain chapel with your spouse and feeling your marriage breathe again.

  • Reading Scripture by the ocean and actually feeling the peace you’ve been praying for.

  • Sitting in a trailer after a hit-and-run car accident during a fire evacuation and laughing until you cry with your best friend, because what else can you do?

Why Travel Helps Us Hear God

Sometimes, in order to hear God’s whisper, we need to get out of our group chats, laundry piles, and to-do lists.

Our everyday lives are beautiful—but they’re also loud. When we leave the routine, our minds slow down. Our hearts open up.

It’s not that God speaks louder when we travel.

It’s that we’re finally quiet enough to listen.

My Approach as a Faith-Based Travel Advisor

As a Christian travel advisor, I don’t just book trips. I pray over them.

I get to know each client—where they are in life, what they need most, and what they’re hoping to discover. I craft experiences that build in space for reflection, connection, stillness, and soul-stirring beauty.

You might receive reflection questions before your trip, a devotional guide tucked into your itinerary, or even a gentle reminder to not overbook your mornings so God actually has a chance to speak before the second espresso hits.

Whether it’s a solo retreat, a couples getaway, or a “this-is-our-year” adventure, I approach each trip with prayer, presence, and purpose.

So… Is Transformational Travel for You?

Maybe you’ve felt stuck in a season of burnout.

Maybe you’re celebrating something new—or grieving something deep.

Maybe you just need a sacred reset (and a reason to pack that cute carry-on you bought two years ago).

You don’t have to travel extravagantly to experience transformation. But you do need to go with intention.

And I would love to help you do just that.

You were never meant to rush through life. Sometimes, the most powerful thing you can do is pause—on purpose. When you step away with intention, you make space to hear God more clearly, feel more deeply, and return with fresh eyes and a full heart.
